Overview

Why buyers look at Clayton

Clayton is a town in western Johnston County, east of Garner along I-40. It had 26,307 people in the 2020 census, and recent Census estimates put it above 30,000.

Novo Nordisk already runs two manufacturing facilities in Clayton. In June 2024 it announced a $4.1 billion expansion here with 1,000 new jobs, with major construction phases expected to finish between 2027 and 2029. Grifols and Caterpillar are also large local employers.

Road names around Clayton changed in 2025. About 10 miles of the US-70 bypass between I-40 (Exit 309) and the US-70 Business interchange became I-42. Old US-70 Business became US-70 again, named Clayton Boulevard near the county line, and NC-42 in this area was renumbered NC-36. Older listings and maps may still use the former names.

Clayton has three golf clubs: Riverwood Golf & Athletic Club, Pine Hollow Golf Club, and Neuse Country Club. Riverwood is also a planned neighborhood built around its course.

The employer corridor, including Novo Nordisk and Grifols. Homes near these interchanges have the shortest drive to work for people at those plants.

History

From Stallings’ Station to Clayton

The town grew along a road cut around 1770 by Governor Tryon’s troops marching from New Bern to Hillsborough. When the North Carolina Railroad arrived nearly a century later, the depot was in the home of Sarah Stallings, and the stop was called Stallings’ Station.

The name changed to Clayton after about three years, and the town was incorporated in 1869. Cotton, watermelons, and tobacco were the early crops. Eight Clayton properties are now on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Clayton Historic District and the Cleveland School.

For Owners

What is your Clayton home worth?

Online estimates do not account for lot size, upgrades, golf or club membership, or which highway a home sits closest to. I will prepare a price range from recent comparable sales and send it to you. There is no obligation to list.

  • Comparable sales near your address
  • A suggested price range and the reasoning behind it
  • Which updates would raise your sale price and which would not

I prepare these myself from local sales data. Your information is not shared or sold.

Questions

Common questions about buying in Clayton

What do homes cost in Clayton right now?

Prices change month to month, so I send current numbers on request instead of posting figures that go out of date. Request the market report and I will send recent sales, homes for sale, and days on market for the area you are considering.

How do you get from Clayton to Raleigh?

I-40 runs west from Clayton through Garner to Raleigh. From the I-40/I-42 interchange in Garner, Toll NC-540 runs west toward Holly Springs and RTP. Test the commute from a specific address at rush hour before you buy.

Why do some listings say NC-42 and others NC-36?

In 2025 NCDOT renumbered NC-42 in this area as NC-36 and turned the US-70 bypass into I-42. The road is the same; the sign changed. Older listings and maps may still use the old numbers.

Should I look in Clayton or Garner?

Clayton is in Johnston County, with its own school system and property tax rate, and is close to the Novo Nordisk and Grifols plants. Garner is in Wake County and closer to Raleigh. I can send recent sales from both so you can compare similar homes side by side.
